Understanding and Responding to Self-Harm

Michelle Mitchell

National statistics tell us that around one in ten young people self-harm. Regardless of how widely accepted self-harm has become in teenage culture, it remains an issue, which is difficult for many adults to fully understand. Our default reaction is often subconsciously shaming, blaming and criticizing, NOT because we don’t want to help but because we don’t know how else to handle it.  This presentation will provide practical information, helping delegates understand of what self-harm is, why young people engage in such behaviour, and how best to respond to young people who are self-harming.
